The famous types of Mental Health Problems and how to deal with them

Mental Health Problems

In this fast-paced world, we are most likely to take care of only our physical health and ignoring our mental health. What we must know is that we cannot get a healthy body if our mental health is left ignored. Here are some of the most famous types of mental health problems and some tips on how to deal with them.

Depression

Depression is the most common mental health problem across the globe in which the individual is having extremely low moods and a general giving up attitude on life. A depressed person can’t fully enjoy any happy occasion as compared to a mentally healthy person. If not treated, it can turn to major depression, which can induce suicidal thoughts in a person.

How to Deal with it?

With emotional support, medications, and behavioral therapies, including Cognitive Behavior Therapy, symptoms of depression, can be managed. It is also necessary to religiously follow up on the course of treatment for Major Depressive Disorder to protect the individual from suicidal behavior.

Anxiety

A person having anxiety experiences constant fear and negative thoughts, which keeps stress levels up and hampers overall performance in routine work. Anxiety is also one of the major types of mental health disorders. These are common among all age groups, genders, and ethnicities.

How to Deal with it?

Anxiety can be dealt with some psychological assistance in which different behavior therapies can aid in treating it. However, if the symptoms aggravate, medications are required to alleviate the symptoms. The latter is a more conventional route of treatment in types of anxieties like Social Anxiety Disorder, which hampers the affected individual to live a healthy social life. Meditations and behavior therapies are also included in the treatment protocols for anxiety.

Schizophrenia

It is a common neurological condition in which a person starts seeing hallucinations and experiences paranoia and fright. Although there has been a lot of research on Schizophrenia, the causes remain unknown. Some believe that this disease is due to genetics and the environment.

How to Deal with it?

While medications are essential for people with Schizophrenia, adapting to some healthy lifestyle activities for them is also crucial. This includes maintaining a healthy weight, setting up small, achievable goals, and staying away from illegal drugs and alcohol as they can aggravate the hallucinations.

Anorexia

Anorexia comes under the umbrella of anxiety disorders related to abnormal eating behaviors. In anorexia, a person develops poor dietary habits that cause the person to give up on eating enough calories. The calorie restriction is so much that the person gets almost like a skeletal appearance. It arises from negative body image perspectives that make the individual want to appear more acceptable to society or to feel secure in a timid body.

How to Deal with it?

Nutritionists, doctors, and psychological experts altogether work for patients with anorexia. A healthy diet plan, antidepressants, and emotional support are all highly essential for the treatment of anorexic patients.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder

People having Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) have constant thoughts or anxiety compelling them to perform specific tasks repeatedly. For example, a fear of getting germs may cause the person to wash hands excessively. This usually doesn’t imply life danger to the patient. However, it can hamper the overall routine of the individual, and therefore must be treated.

How to Deal with it?

Behavioral therapies and meditation can help the affected individual acquire more control over the mind. Moreover, replacement therapy can also reduce the urge for repeating the particular action of a person with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder might arise when a person goes through a traumatic experience, such as the death of a loved one or sexual assault. People having the disorder often get flashbacks of the trauma with or without a trigger. The frightening thoughts have a varied response in individuals having the disease.

How to Deal with it?

Emotional support plays a huge role in helping a person manage symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder. Relaxation techniques such as meditation and yoga help calm the affected individual’s mind and gain good control over getting triggered by specific situations.

Bipolar Disorder and Borderline personality disorder

Bipolar disease is characterized by an individual having manic episodes of mood swings on abrupt scales. The highs can include laughing too much and too hard excessively, uncontrolled aggression, and hysteria, while the lows are extreme symptoms of depression and suicidal behavior in some cases.

Borderline personality disorder is different from bipolar disorder in terms of the duration of the ups and downs of the mood episodes. People having borderline traits might experience lows and highs related to body image, self-esteem, relationships, and behaviors on a scale that goes on for time longer than an abrupt episode, as seen in patients with bipolar disorder.

How to Deal with it?

Making changes to daily life, avoiding harmful triggers, and regularly going for appointments to the doctor are some important approaches to managing the symptoms of these diseases. A diet rich in fruits and vegetables is helpful for patients with the disease. As they are full of important vitamins and minerals. Especially, Magnesium, vitamin C, and Zinc play a positive role in reducing symptoms of these disorders.

Other famous types of mental health problems include ADHD -Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, dysthymia, and Dementia. They usually follow the same treatment routes, as mentioned above.

Final Verdict

Mental health has an important role in the sustenance of a better quality of life of an individual. While these mental health problems are quite common in individuals of all ages and genders, a multidimensional approach for treating the symptoms is an effective tool towards these disorders.

However, it’s good to note that while a lot of us have these problems, life is tough for us all. Embracing kindness and giving small gestures of affection play a huge role in relieving the symptoms of stress and anxiety. Let’s take responsibility to make this world a better place by spreading love and by staying away from hatred and indifference.
